Update on the 2023-24 Ottawa Sting U13 AA Tryouts

Further to my previous message, I’m the U13 Liaison for this season and will be your main point of contact throughout tryouts. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time.

This email is to give you additional information about the U13 tryout process.

The tryout series will start this Friday August 25th for all players and goalies. An evaluation for goalies-only will take place on August 27th. The U13AA team is expected to be formed after the last tryout exhibition game scheduled for September 1st. At that point, released players will be invited to continue the tryout process to the next level with Sting or Golden Knights. At each step, you will receive regular communication to guide you and your player through the process.

As noted previously, for the entirety of the tryout series, your player will be identified by their tryout jersey number. Please ensure that you have a white and black tryout jersey with corresponding numbers, and that I have the correct number for your player. It is your player’s responsibility to bring both jerseys to all tryout sessions.

Other than two assigned adult monitors, we ask that only players be present in the dressing rooms.  Though the monitors can provide some minor help, we expect that all players at this age should be comfortable dressing themselves and tying their skates.  In the event there is an equipment failure, one of the monitors will either send a message to a parent / guardian or will instruct the player to leave the room to seek help.

The full tryout schedule for U13AA can be found on the Ottawa Sting website under U13AA (there is a tab for “Schedule”) and you will receive more specific communication ahead of the start of tryouts. Your player will be assigned designated days and times to attend.  As mentioned above, there is also a special goalie skills assessment that only goalies are required to attend. Any player who intends to forego the U13AA tryout and attend only the U13B tryout should let me know as soon as possible and prior to the start of AA tryouts.

Evaluation Criteria

The final roster will be selected based on what the evaluators believe will be the strongest team towards the latter part of the season. Skills displayed at tryouts will clearly be a function of the player’s assessment (their starting point), however, current skills are not the exclusive measure of where they will be in a few months.  Players will also be assessed on factors including but not limited to, their effort, their engagement, their resilience, the way they play with one another and their ability to anticipate the play.

Goalie evaluations will be undertaken by evaluators with prior subject matter experience. Two goalies will be selected based on criteria that include their stance; edgework; save selections; positioning; demeanour; and the technical elements of their game.

Coach Mark will spend a few minutes in each dressing room prior to the first session to remind the players of the evaluation criteria. We recommend, however, that players read this message and Coach Mark’s letter posted on the Sting website in advance so they are better prepared.

Coach Mark will not be addressing the parents. If you or your player have questions, please let me know in advance so that we can be prepared to answer any questions prior to the first session.

During tryouts, a player may be asked to move from forward to defence and vice versa. Positions that are declared during the registration process will be considered. However, it is our intent to assemble a team of players who are well placed at the AA level regardless of the position they play.

Tryout Session Schedule (as of August 21st, 2023)

***The schedule may change, so please check the Sting website for the most up-to-date schedule.***

Before arriving at the rink your player MUST:
  • Remove all previous team decals/stickers from your helmet as well as any on-ice gear (ie: shells).
  • Leave your cell phone at home or with your parents. Cell phones are NOT allowed into the dressing room.
REMINDERS
  • Please make sure you have both your black and white Sting tryout jerseys at every tryout session.
  • Please make sure the players are mentally and physically prepared for tryouts. This includes showing up with the proper nutrition and hydration.
  • Please make sure your player has a water bottle for the bench.
  • Please make sure your player does a gear/bag check before they come to the rink.  Forgetting a key piece of gear happens more often than you might think.
  • Although the COVID restrictions have been lifted, players experiencing any cold and/or flu like symptoms are to refrain from attending a tryout session and must communicate their absence with the liaison immediately. The health and safety of our players and coaches is very important to us as an association.

Please check your email daily for future communications and tryout assignments.

Any questions, please let me know!

Regards,
Alia Tayyeb
